Lucas Tomoana: award-winning Cinematographer

February 23, 2018 Posted by DPouesi Uncategorized

His name is Lucas Tomoana. His dad is part palagi (Caucasian) and Maori but his mother, Lisa Karene-Seedhouse, reminds “him often enough that he has more Samoan blood in him.” Lucas was born in little Singapore to “a Samoan matai (chief) and a New Zealand Army Major.” He was “raised in the wet of Auckland, New Zealand and the heat of Brisbane, Australia.” At the age of 18, he was set to join the military. But then he “stumbled across an old 16mm film camera” and, as they say, the rest is history.

In 2013, after graduating top of his class, he was accepted into the Australian Film Television & Radio School where he specialized in Cinematography. At 27, he had already won 14 ACS Awards including four Golds. He has worked in France, Belgium, Germany, The UK, and China. His first feature documentary “Ella”, shot with the Australian Ballet, premiered at the 2016 Melbourne International Film Festival.
