Samoan artist, John Unasa (left), is one of the artists participating in the Haier Big Hoot—Auckland 2018 Auction this month. John’s latest work of art, an owl sculpture, is somewhat of a departure for the artist who is known for his traditional Samoan motif. What’s the story behind the owl? “There was a call out for artists to instill in their designs something to represent NZ and kiwi culture,” John wrote. “I went through a few phases considering Maori carving, Jandals lol and other symbols representing the cultural diversity here in New Zealand…and then as a side note I drew up an idea which made the Owl an All Black, one of the strongest icons of New Zealand. The New Zealand Child Cancer Foundation immediately connected with this concept as by coincidence it aligned with a concept they already had in mind. They just hadn’t chosen an artist yet. So they chose me.”
According to Brett O’Riley, CEO of the Auckland Tourism, Events Economic Development, John’s Captain Owl, along with 47 other super-sized owl sculptures will be auctioned off to raise money for the Child Cancer Foundation on Tuesday 29 May. Child Cancer Foundation provides practical, emotional and financial support to Kiwi kids with cancer and their families.
John is thrilled and grateful that he’s making a difference in young people’s lives using his God-given talents and gifts. “What a journey this little owl has taken me on,” he said. “The owl began as a sketch 9 months ago and has turned into an OWL BLACK with signatures of some of the greats all over him.”
OWL BLACK will be at EY Building, 2 Takutai Square, Britomart, Auckland from March 3 to May 6 2018. Congratulations, John, on your wonderful work and contribution to the community.
